Initial Group Leader Training Part 1: Connect

CONNECT:

This section of the training should take between 15-20 minutes to complete.

The CONNECT portion of your group meeting is when you connect relationally with your members. The time is not just about food. It gives people a chance to transition from thinking about family and work to being fully present with the group.

As a part of your group, it's best to take the first 15–30 minutes to Connect together.

IDEAS FOR CONNECTING:

  • Icebreakers: These are usually less personal and more fun. Some examples: Well Known: A Pocket Guide for Deeper Conversation
  • Story Cards: Pictures help people identify how they feel about a particular question. This may encourage the group to talk a little more personally without the conversation feeling forced. Story Cards are available for purchase at groupleaders.org/storycards.
  • Personal/Group Check-In: This is an opportunity for you to ask how group members are doing. Possible questions include:
    • How was your week? Did anything exciting happen?
    • How are you feeling about faith? Are you currently energized or drained?
    • What has been the hardest thing you’ve walked through this week?
    • What were the highs and lows/wows and pows?
Part 1: CONNECT

1. What can we do to create environments where people feel safe to share?

2. Have you ever been part of a group where you felt like you belonged? What was that like?

3. What does the word “authentic” mean to you? Have you ever met someone with this quality? What were they like?

4. Why does consistency matter for creating great community?
