<p>To build trust, leaders must first be vulnerable themselves. By admitting their own mistakes and weaknesses, leaders create a safe space for others to do the same. Encourage team members to share personal experiences (within professional boundaries) and acknowledge contributions to foster genuine connection.</p>

<h4>Dysfunction 2: Fear of Conflict</h4><p>The fear of conflict is the tendency for team members to shun healthy debate and constructive disagreement. This dysfunction stems directly from the absence of trust. When team members don't trust each other, they avoid engaging in passionate discourse about important issues. This can lead to political behavior and interpersonal strife.</p><p>Conversely, teams that have no fear of conflict are able to engage in lively and passionate debate around ideas. They are able to disagree and even argue because they trust that their colleagues are engaging in the pursuit of truth and the best outcome for the team.</p>

When team members are able to weigh in and commit to a decision, they are more likely to follow through, even if they initially disagreed. This requires clear communication and alignment.</p>

<p>To ensure commitment, create mechanisms for team members to voice concerns and perspectives before decisions are finalized. Even if not every suggestion is implemented, the opportunity to be heard fosters a sense of ownership. Summarize key decisions and action items clearly to reinforce alignment.</p>

<h4>Dysfunction 4: Avoidance of Accountability</h4><p>In a team that lacks commitment, accountability isn't really an issue because the team isn't committed to anything. However, in a team with commitment, the fear of conflict can cause a lack of accountability. Team members are unwilling to call their peers on behaviors or performance that might hurt the team. This often stems from the leader's failure to establish clear standards and demand accountability.</p><p>When there are clear goals and standards, team members are more likely to hold each other accountable. Peer accountability is powerful because it comes from a place of shared commitment and respect.</p>

<h4>Dysfunction 5: Inattention to Results</h4><p>The ultimate dysfunction is the inability of team members to engage in selfless commitment to the team's collective results. It is often the result of a lack of accountability. When team members are not held accountable, they are less likely to focus on the collective success of the group. Instead, they may focus on their own status, career advancement, or personal recognition.</p><p>When teams are focused on results, it provides a compelling reason for them to put aside personal glory. The scoreboard is the ultimate tool for driving accountability and ensuring that the team stays focused on what matters most.</p>
