<h2>The Four Horsemen Explained</h2><p>The 'Four Horsemen' is a metaphor describing four destructive patterns of communication in relationships: Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling. As mentors, it’s vital to help engaged couples recognize these patterns and replace them with healthy habits early on.</p>

What Are the Four Horsemen?

<h3>Criticism</h3><p>Criticism is attacking your partner’s character or personality, not just pointing out a behavior. In engaged couples, it might sound like, 'You’re so forgetful!' instead of 'I felt disappointed when you forgot our plans.'</p><p>Mentor Tip: Help couples focus on using 'I' statements and expressing needs without blame.</p>

Horseman 1: Criticism

<h3>Contempt</h3><p>Contempt shows up as mocking, sarcasm, eye-rolling, or ridicule. It signals disrespect and can be very toxic, especially early in a relationship. For engaged couples, small jokes or sarcasm can easily become patterns that chip away at respect.</p><p>Mentor Tip: Emphasize shared appreciation and respect. Encourage couples to express gratitude for each other regularly.</p>

Horseman 2: Contempt

<h3>Defensiveness</h3><p>Defensiveness is self-protection through playing the victim or making excuses. It can prevent understanding and solutions. Engaged couples might say, 'It’s not my fault!' instead of listening and taking some responsibility.</p><p>Mentor Tip: Model humility and the importance of listening first, even when it’s hard.</p>

<h3>Stonewalling</h3><p>Stonewalling is shutting down or withdrawing from interaction, often due to feeling overwhelmed. Engaged couples may go silent during disagreements, which can create distance.</p><p>Mentor Tip: Teach couples to take breaks and calm down instead of shutting out their partner. Emotional regulation is a lifelong skill for married life.</p>

Horseman 4: Stonewalling

<h2>Replacing the Four Horsemen</h2><p>The antidotes to the Four Horsemen are: gentle startups (instead of criticism), appreciation (instead of contempt), taking responsibility (instead of defensiveness), and self-soothing (instead of stonewalling). As mentors, guide engaged couples in practicing these antidotes together through role-play, prayer, and mindful reflection.</p>
