<h2>Welcome Mentors!</h2><p>This training module equips you to guide engaged couples in your church community. You’ll learn how to help them recognize and avoid four destructive communication patterns—known as the 'Four Horsemen'—and discover healthier ways to build their love and faith together.</p>

<h3>The Four Horsemen: What Are They?</h3><p>Gottman’s 'Four Horsemen' are Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and Stonewalling. These patterns can undermine trust and connection, but with awareness and guidance, engaged couples can build strong foundations instead.</p>

<h4>1. Criticism</h4><p>Criticism sounds like attacking your partner personally: 'You never listen to me.' Instead, teach couples to use 'I' statements: 'I feel unheard when… ' This shift encourages healthy dialogue.</p>

<h4>2. Contempt</h4><p>Contempt comes out as sarcasm, mockery, or eye rolling. It destroys respect and erodes intimacy. Encourage couples to practice gratitude and highlight one another’s strengths instead.</p>

<h4>3. Defensiveness</h4><p>Defensiveness is making excuses or refusing to accept responsibility. Remind couples it’s better to listen and seek understanding, even if it’s uncomfortable. Saying, 'I see your point,' can go a long way.</p>

<h4>4. Stonewalling</h4><p>Stonewalling is withdrawing from the conversation or shutting down emotionally. Couples can learn to notice overwhelm and agree to take breaks, then return to talk things through with a fresh perspective.</p>

<h3>Antidotes: Building Something Better</h3><ul><li><strong>Gentle Start-up</strong> for Criticism</li><li><strong>Appreciation &amp; Respect</strong> for Contempt</li><li><strong>Taking Responsibility</strong> for Defensiveness</li><li><strong>Self-Soothing</strong> for Stonewalling</li></ul><p>Coach couples to use these antidotes and lean on their faith and commitment to each other. Prayer, gratitude, and open communication set a strong foundation for marriage.</p>
