Welcome to Re:new Mentor Training!Re:new is designed to help individuals discover why they are stuck in life by uncovering lies they believe about themselves, others, and God. They will develop an understanding of who they are in Christ. By understanding their identity in Christ, they will learn to live in freedom—freedom to experience the Christian life as God intended.Please answer the questions below.

What gifts and skills do you believe God has given you that will help you be effective?

Chances are many of you went through something in your lives that was painful, and you were either comforted by others or weren’t comforted and wish you had been. Now you have the opportunity to walk with someone else who is struggling and offer them the same comfort and encouragement you received or perhaps you wish you had received.

2 Corinthians 1:3—5: All praise to the God and Father of our Master, Jesus the Messiah! Father of all mercy! God of all healing counsel! He comes alongside us when we go through hard times, and before you know it, he brings us alongside someone else who is going through hard times so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us. (The Message)

Re:new can bring you freedom if you are struggling with something specific: It can also refresh you even if you are not currently struggling with something but simply desire a deeper understanding of your identity in Christ. Hopefully, you have experienced times in your own relationship with Christ where you gained a deeper understanding of how to live in relationship with him. Re:new is an exciting opportunity to walk with someone as they grow spiritually as well.We'd like to give you a brief overview of the Re:new material. You can follow along by looking at the Table of Contents on page 3 of your Re:new workbook.HISTORY: We begin the Re:new process by taking an extensive inventory&nbsp;of your past. We believe that in order to move forward, sometimes you have to look back. The way we interpret the events, circumstances, or people from our pasts has helped shape the lies we believe, how we look at the world, how we view God, and how we view ourselves.&nbsp;NEEDS: After taking your history, we discover how you get your needs met. God created us with needs—the need to feel secure, to be satisfied, to feel significant. What matters is how you go about meeting those needs. Do you depend on God to meet your needs or do you look to things like relationships or accomplishments to meet them?FALSE BELIEFS: You’ll identify the lies you believe about yourself. In Re:new, we call them false beliefs. These false beliefs drive negative or damaging behaviors or emotions like anger, depression, anxiety, people-pleasing, or perfectionism. You learn that you can’t simply put aside false beliefs; you have to actively replace them with new beliefs.FLESH: Flesh is how you get your needs met apart from Christ. It’s your own variety of sin. You’ll map out your flesh on what we call the “flesh diagram.” Flesh looks pretty ugly, but we’ll help you discover that it’s NOT who you are but how you function when you are not depending on Jesus and his resources.TRUTH: We begin applying truth by using scripture to counter each false belief you have with the truth of God’s Word. This is a critical piece of the process as you begin to internalize the truth about what God’s Word says about you. This is where you really begin the process of renewing your mind.&nbsp;FREEDOM: You'll talk more about the freedom that comes from understanding who you are in Christ and living out of your new identity.&nbsp;IDENTITY: Re:new is designed to help believers become more aware of their rich identity in Christ. What God says about us is true, regardless of whether we believe it's true.&nbsp;BROKENNESS: You will learn the difference between brokenness and suffering. Brokenness is a position of surrender where your dependency shifts from worldly things or other people to becoming more dependent on Christ. It's only when we understand how deeply dependent we are that we can begin to experience abundant life.FORGIVENESS: We'll discuss forgiveness and why we are asked to forgive, as well as common myths about forgiveness.&nbsp;ABIDING: The Christian life is not meant to be one of struggle. Abiding is learning to yield ourselves moment by moment to Jesus as our source of life.So are you eager to get started?

I came to her at a very vulnerable and confused time with a thirst to have the relationship [with God] that I heard was possible. She was the absolute best listener and I give her so much credit for where I am in my relationship with the Lord and understanding my identity in him. She was exactly what I needed and met me right where I was every time we got together and didn't give up telling me who I was. God gave me the greatest blessing with her!

A few details about the training schedule and Re:new materials:Re:new Training Structure/ScheduleRe:new training is designed to be experiential. You will be placed in small groups of three to four trainees and will mentor one another in a simulated mentoring environment. You'll be with this group for the duration of the training. There will also be an experienced mentor facilitator with your training small group to give real-time feedback and answer any questions.&nbsp;There are two different components of Re:new training:&nbsp;<ol><li>Digital — You will learn and interact with the content via this digital training platform. You'll be able to work through the digital components on your own schedule and pace.&nbsp;</li><li>Small Group — You will meet in person or online (depending on your campus) with your training group and mentor facilitator to practice what you are learning. The Re:new staff at your campus will give you an exact schedule for the meetings and attendance is required.&nbsp;</li></ol>Re:new Materials:<ul><li>Re:new Workbook — This is the same workbook a care receiver gets.</li><li>Re:new Leader Guide — This is the detailed guide you’ll follow for each mentoring session.</li><li>Leader Training Packet — This includes a homework checklist and training schedule, content outlines for the training talks, and note-taking pages.</li></ul>

Welcome and Introduction

We believe effective Re:new mentors need four key skills. Developing these skills is essential to gaining influence as a mentor.&nbsp;<ol><li>Listen well.</li><li>Ask good questions.</li><li>Be authentic.</li><li>Empathize.</li></ol>

Who is the best listener in your life and what makes them a good listener?

<h3>Skill 1: Listen well</h3>Perhaps the most important need your care receiver (CR) will have when they start meeting with you is the need to have someone who will genuinely listen to them. By just showing up for them and being a really good listener, you are going to give them something they may not have had in a long time. And that is a gift! Listening is really, really important.&nbsp;There are several characteristics we must possess to be good listeners.<ol><li>Desire: You have to want to listen to your CR. Desire comes from God. You can pray and ask God to give you a desire to listen to your CR.</li><li>Commitment: Mentoring requires commitment. There will be times when mentoring is the last thing you want to do—especially after a long, hard day at work or an argument with your spouse or friend. Your consistency and commitment to meeting with your CR is very important.&nbsp;</li><li>Patience: We need a lot of patience to listen well. We use the 80/20 rule in mentoring. You will be listening 80 percent of the time and talking 20 percent—especially in the first few sessions when you are getting to know your CR and hearing their story. This means you should be talking hardly at all! You are going to give them the floor. Yes, you can ask them clarifying questions, and as the mentoring continues and you earn their trust, the 80/20 will even out a bit.&nbsp;</li></ol>

The Five steps to Active Listening:<ol><li>Stay focused: Keep natural eye contact, don't judge, be patient.</li><li>Don't think about your similar experiences or about what you should say next.</li><li>Allow for periods of silence.</li><li>Paraphrase the person's words back to them.</li><li>Understand the emotions behind the words and express the feelings.</li></ol>

Now we are going to practice active listening! Be intentional and pick a time to practice this skill with a family member or friend.

Ask them to tell you about a time when they were either very happy, very sad, or very angry. Listen for five to ten minutes as they describe this time. Use the skills you learned in the video: staying focused, keeping eye contact, being patient, reflecting feelings, etc.

We got to know one another fairly quickly, which made the process that much easier. She was wonderful to me and for me.Don was great! He was really good at listening, asking questions, and pulling from other resources, such as devotionals and Scripture, to aid in the discussion.

<h3>Skill 2: Ask good questions</h3>Asking good, meaningful questions is an essential skill in building an effective mentoring relationship. Questions help mentors better understand the CR's needs and where to direct the conversation. Watch the video below on asking good questions and answer the following questions.

Review the level 1, 2, and 3 questions described in the video. Which are the easiest for you to ask? Which are the hardest? Why?

<h3>Skill 3: Be authentic</h3>Share stories about your life and experiences that are appropriately transparent and vulnerable. Your CR needs to know you haven't gotten it all right. This will give them hope as they experience difficulties in their own life. And it will pave the way for harder discussions when you might need to challenge them.A couple of points to remember about sharing your own experiences:<ol><li>Make sure your stories are helpful, relevant, and appropriate.</li><li>Be mindful of how long you talk. Your CR will enjoy listening to engaging stories, but it's important to make your point and then let them share.</li></ol>

What is one thing you hope to leverage from your story? Why? 

<h3>Skill 4: Empathize</h3><ol><li>Make the mentoring sessions safe, confidential environments where the CR can feel comfortable sharing their challenges without feeling judged.&nbsp;</li><li>Open your heart as you listen to their challenges to the point where you are able to feel and reflect what they are feeling. Is there a similar challenge in your own life that could help you relate to the emotions they are feeling?</li><li>Take the time to understand their perspective to the point where you are able to see what they are seeing. Ask yourself what it would be like to be in their situation, experiencing what they are experiencing.</li><li>Resist the urge to focus on fixing the problem. Try to provide insight and guide your CR through the process of exploring the problem and potential solutions.&nbsp;</li></ol>In the following video, Brene Brown illustrates how to build empathy through connection.

Put yourself in the shoes of your CR as they meet you for the first time. What might they be concerned about? How can you alleviate those concerns?

God created us with needs. Our needs fall into three broad categories:<ol><li>Security (safety)</li><li>Satisfaction (contentment)</li><li>Significance (worth)</li></ol>There's nothing inherently wrong with having needs. PART 3

False beliefs and the negative behaviors and emotions they cause are examples of how you live in the flesh. They are ways you attempt to meet your needs apart from God. Flesh is your own "variety" of sin. Based on your reading, answer the questions below.

In the next in-person session, we will practice diagramming and presenting a flesh wall with your training partner(s). In the meantime, please review the instructions below.These are some practical tips for creating a Flesh Diagram. We have also included sample diagrams to review.<ol><li>Don't try to get this perfect. This is a working document.&nbsp;</li><li>Only use words your CR (in this case, your training partner) has said or written down in their workbook. Don't use your own interpretations or thoughts about why you think they do something or behave a certain way.</li><li>Remember, this is a simulated mentoring environment. In the last two sections, we explored the power of false beliefs and the damaging behaviors and emotions that are driven by them. We can't simply erase false beliefs; we must replace them with the truth of Christ. Lies fade and disappear when we dispute them with truth. This allows us to experience new, healthy behaviors and emotions.&nbsp;

To present the teaching on truth, we will be watching a three-part video featuring Elaine Scott. Elaine is the Director of Women's Groups at Woodstock City Church and a longtime Re:new mentor. To tee up the conversation, please watch this short clip below from The Lord of the Rings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

But when he, the Spirit of truth,&nbsp;comes, he will guide you into all the truth.&nbsp;He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. — John 16:13

Elaine shared how we are incapable of changing ourselves in our own strength. What behavior have you tried to change in the past in your own strength/ability? What was the outcome?

Elaine shared that when we place our faith in Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. The Holy Spirit can be a confusing and often controversial topic. What was your perception of the Holy Spirit or what were you taught about the Holy Spirit when you were young? What is your perception of the Holy Spirit today?

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. — 2 Corinthians 10:4—5

The apostle Paul understood the power of the mind and the importance of fixing our minds on truth. Give an example of a time in your life when you recognized you had a false belief and intentionally set your mind on truth. What was the result?

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. — John 8:32

The way we view our heavenly Father is often influenced by our experiences with our earthly fathers. Has your relationship with your earthly father shaped or impacted your relationship with your heavenly Father? Why or why not?

Elaine shared that we have an enemy who attempts to keep us bound and ineffective for God. Have you had an experience, recent or in your past, when you recognized the enemy's attempt to distract and deceive you? How did you respond?

When you sin, do you tend to avoid God by not praying or opening the Bible? Why?

Re:new Mentor Training: Part 4<ol><li>Identity</li><li>Brokenness</li></ol>

PART 4

Congratulations, you are more than half-way through training! You have learned a lot during the past few weeks, and it's normal to feel overwhelmed. This is a good time to remind you that you cannot mentor in your own strength and resources. You must depend on the Holy Spirit to guide you. Your confidence as a mentor will grow with experience.&nbsp;In the past few sections, we've explored false beliefs, the flesh, spiritual warfare, and Christ as the source of all truth. Resolution of our sin issue (flesh) begins with trusting God, our Creator, to tell us who we are. As we renew our minds, replacing false beliefs is only half of the picture. Renewing the mind also involves absorbing what Scripture says about who we are and the nature of our relationship with God through Christ.&nbsp;Who does God say we are? We are new creations!&nbsp;

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. — Galatians 2:20

Identity

All of us experience suffering. When we do, we may feel like we're back to square one; and everything we've learned in Re:new doesn't mean anything. Even in the midst of suffering, we can continue to walk in freedom. Suffering well involves brokenness and is often the catalyst for it.Your CR will likely have an idea of what brokenness means to them. It has a negative connotation in our culture. Merriam-Webster's dictionary defines broken as "separated into parts or pieces by being hit or damaged," or "not working properly." Your CR may feel this way.&nbsp;When someone uses the term "broken," what they may be implying is that they are suffering. They are broken hearted but may not be truly broken.&nbsp;An individual can suffer and not experience true brokenness.You will be showing your CR the difference between brokenness and suffering. They may seem the same, but to a Christian, they are very different.

What is the difference between brokenness and suffering?&nbsp;&nbsp;Suffering is a condition.Brokenness is a position.&nbsp;Suffering is a universal condition for all human beings—believers and nonbelievers alike. It encompasses trials, adversity, and seasons of trouble. No one goes through life without suffering. We don't have a choice.&nbsp;

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33

We typically fight against suffering. It's painful, and we will often do everything we can to eradicate it.&nbsp;What if there's a better way? Instead of focusing on eliminating suffering, we can focus on walking through it in a position of brokenness.&nbsp;Brokenness is an attitude or posture God brings you to, so you want nothing other than him.&nbsp;In brokenness, we acknowledge our complete dependence on God to meet all of our needs. We are willing to give up anything we depend on to meet our needs apart from him.&nbsp;Brokenness is a position of surrender. Often it's a physical posture of being on our knees saying, "God I can't do this any more on my own." Watch this short clip from the movie Bruce Almighty as an illustration of what a physical posture of surrender can look like.

In the midst of our suffering, what's important is our response. Stories about Helen Keller, Corrie Ten Boom and Nelson Mandela aren't inspirational because of their personal suffering. Their stories inspire us because of their response to their suffering.&nbsp;How we respond to our suffering will determine our experiential relationship with God. We don't lose our relationship with God when we suffer, but we can have a very different experience in our suffering. If we choose to rely on our own strength as we go through suffering, we will never experience the sufficiency of God's grace.&nbsp;

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." — 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

The power of Christ's grace cannot be fully experienced until our dependence on him is fully acknowledged.Spiritual brokenness is being in a place where you want God's will more than yours. It's hard to be in a state of brokenness. You've likely been there at some point in your life. Experiences of brokenness can happen at different times and in different areas of your life.&nbsp;Let's go back to your CR for a moment. They will likely have heard from others and probably believe that "God will not give them more than they can handle." This is a commonly accepted belief. Well-meaning Christians often tell people this, referring to 1 Corinthians 10:13.&nbsp;

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. — 1 Corinthians 10:13

We need to dispel the myth that God won't give us more than we can handle. God does allow circumstances and trials in our lives that feel like more than we can bear.The verse in 1 Corinthians 10 specifically addresses temptations; it doesn't address trials. This is an important distinction. Temptations move us to rely on our flesh. They always lead us away from God by encouraging us to act independently of him.&nbsp;We can be confident that God will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle. When we're tempted, God promises to provide a way of escape so we can resist.&nbsp;A trial is a problem in our lives. Trials happen in careers, marriages, churches, and relationships. We often seek mentoring to help us through trials. Relief comes when we receive the trial and surrender our rights and reliance on our flesh. We can't experience victory without passing through trials and responding to them correctly—the way Jesus responded with brokenness, surrender, and choosing to walk in the Spirit.Share examples from your own story with your CR to help them understand how to apply the principles they are learning. Please listen to Amy's story of brokenness and think of examples of brokenness from your own story.&nbsp;

What about you? As you think about your struggles, trials, and suffering, have you experienced brokenness? What has this looked like in your life? 

So why brokenness?What is God's purpose in bringing a person to a state of brokenness? God brings us to a state of brokenness to break any dependency we have on anything other than him to meet our needs. He wants us to live completely aware of our total dependence on him. Why? Because he knows this is the only way for us to experience abundant life.&nbsp;Every trial we face gets our attention. We realize our insufficiency through trials. Trials remind us how dependent we are. Brokenness is the doorway to being used by God. It allows us to minister to others because we understand what they are going through.

How do we know we are responding well to suffering and choosing a posture of brokenness? How do we know we are truly surrendered?

Andy defined spiritual maturity as not being more committed to God but more surrendered to him. It's "I can't, but you can through me." Share an example from your life of a time when you experienced "I can't but you can". What did you learn about yourself? What did you learn about God?

PART 5

Most people are familiar with the word "forgiveness," but few understand what it means. When we are asked to forgive, it makes us uncomfortable and maybe even resentful. This is an important topic in Re:new, and it's important that you discuss this material carefully and sensitively with your CR.&nbsp;No one deserves forgiveness. But God forgave us, and we can offer it to others, even when they don't deserve it.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other. Just as in Christ God forgave you. — Ephesians 4:32

Forgiveness

What does it look like to live the Christian life every day? It's rare that anyone explains this to us. More often, we're told about theology or doctrine but given no advice on how to apply what we've learned to our daily lives.&nbsp;The Christian life is not meant to be one of struggle. Abiding in Christ isn't about exerting effort; it's about yielding ourselves moment by moment to the source of life—Jesus Christ.

For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. —Matthew 11:30

When Jesus says to abide in him, he's urging us to stay close to him, to exist in an uninterrupted relationship with him. He wants us to stay in constant contact with him so he can live his life through us.&nbsp;Watch this video of Billy Phenix, Executive Director of Staff Culture for North Point Ministries, to learn how to remain in Christ so his character is reflected through us.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. —John 15:5

You have a choice each day—each moment—to walk in the Spirit or in the flesh. You can put all your efforts into meeting your needs through worldly means. Or you can abide in Jesus, allowing him to express his power through you, conquering sin in your life. As you abide, you will see greater evidence of God working in your life, and you will experience the manifestations of the Spirit.

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. —Galatians 5:16—17

Abiding in God is staying in close connection with him. This can look different for everyone. How do you connect with God (e.g., journaling, nature, music, Bible study, prayer)?

Abiding

While a flesh wall hides who we truly are, the Spirit Diagram allows us to see ourselves as God intended. It also allows others to see Christ in us. You will help your CR fill out their Spirit Diagram in their Re:new workbook. It's a powerful illustration to show them the difference between what they look like when they are walking in the flesh and when they are walking in the Spirit.&nbsp;Here are sample Spirit Diagrams for the three case study CR's—Taylor, Stephen, and Melanie.

What is one way you can abide and walk by the Spirit today?

During the past few months, we have learned that we all have basic needs we want met: security, satisfaction, and significance. Through learning our identity in Christ, we know he is the means by which our needs are met. He provides us with peace and contentment (satisfaction), a place of safety and a sense of belonging (security), and ascribes value and worth to us (significance). Christ is the provision for all our needs.However, merely understanding this is not enough. Knowledge alone will not set us free; it will only lead us back to getting our needs met through our own efforts. To fully experience freedom from our sinful patterns and behaviors, we must know the truth and then abide in Christ.&nbsp;We have the choice to walk by the Spirit or walk in the flesh. The more we choose to renew our minds with the truth, the more we will see the manifestations of the Spirit present in our lives and our relationships. That's the "life more abundant" that Jesus talks about.&nbsp;

I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. —John 10:10

The Re:new with Truth exercise in the Re:new workbook helps you identify the lies you tell yourself in hurtful circumstances and replace them with truth.&nbsp;After you finish working through all 10 sections in the workbook with your CR, the Re:new with Truth exercise will be your CR's homework. Your CR should come prepared to each meeting with one or more examples of a frustrating or hurtful circumstance, how they felt as a result of that circumstance, the false beliefs that were triggered, and the old behaviors or emotions that arise from those beliefs. They will then chart how they renewed their mind with a truth or new belief and the corresponding new behavior or emotion that resulted from the truth.A blank Re:new with Truth exercise is below.

Please share an example from your own Re:new with Truth exercise. Include an example of a recent hurtful or frustrating circumstance you experienced and the false belief(s) that was triggered along with the old behaviors and emotions. Then share the truth you used to renew your mind and the resulting new behaviors or emotions.

There are three supplemental sections of the Re:new material that can be found in the Appendix of the Re:new workbook. You can use these appendices at your discretion, depending on your CR and their specific needs.&nbsp;Law and Grace (pp. 174—175) can be used along with the False Beliefs or Flesh sections. This appendix is especially helpful for a CR with a legalistic background or who has a lot of positive flesh. There is an audio message on the participant website for this appendix. Our environments are reflections of the extraordinary people who, like yourself, pursued an opportunity for broader influence.With increased influence comes increased accountability. The AME (Adult Ministry Environments) Leader Agreement is designed to define and clarify expectations for our leaders. The challenge is that being a leader is a role model position and is therefore all-encompassing – being a role model involves seven days a week, not just one day. <h3>Getting started with your CR</h3>Q: How are we paired with care receivers?&nbsp;You will receive an email from a Re:new staff member asking you to consider taking a care receiver (CR). They will share some basic facts about the CR such as age, marital status, the presenting struggles that have caused them to seek a Re:new mentor, and what they hope to gain from it.It’s your decision whether or not to take the CR. You are free to say no. It’s important for you to feel good about the match and not have reservations. If you decide to move forward, a Re:new staff member will send the CR’s Re:new application to you digitally.&nbsp;Your Re:new staff member will contact the CR and let them know they have been paired and when they can expect to hear from you. Please contact the CR within three days of receiving their application to introduce yourself and schedule your first meeting.&nbsp;During your early interactions with your CR, don’t ask if they would like you to mentor them. Your Re:new staff member will have explained that their mentor is assigned. Your CR needs to see you are confident and fully committed to the mentoring relationship.&nbsp;Q: Where can we meet with our CR?&nbsp;When you introduce yourself to your CR, talk about meeting options and let them decide which location would be preferable. You want to meet your CR where they’re going to feel comfortable. You may decide together to vary your meeting sites. The location does need to be neutral. Do not meet at your home or your CR’s. <h3>The Mentoring Process</h3>Q: How do we get a workbook for our CR?&nbsp;You will be informed when and where to pick up your workbook when you receive the instructions for downloading the CR’s application.Q: When do we give our CR their workbook?&nbsp;You will give it to them the first time you meet.&nbsp;Q: What do we talk about during our first meeting?&nbsp;You will discuss and accomplish the following:&nbsp;<ul><li>Give your CR their workbook.</li></ul>You will give your CR an overview of the mentoring process. You will talk about the best days and times to meet, how long each session will last, how to contact each other in case one of you needs to cancel, and approximately how long the mentoring process will last. Assure your CR that it will end gradually—you will not stop meeting abruptly, but will transition to meeting less frequently.&nbsp;<ul><li>Review your CR’s expectations and goals for the mentoring process.</li></ul>You can use your CR’s responses in the Summary section of their application to guide these conversations. Use the Mentor Preparation and Introduction sections in the Re:new Leader Guide to help you prepare for the first meeting.&nbsp;<ul><li>Communicate your expectations for the mentoring process.</li></ul>Your CR needs to know they are expected to arrive on time for meetings, complete all homework, and communicate with you if they need to cancel. If they miss two meetings without communicating, mentoring may be terminated.&nbsp;<ul><li>Tell your CR you will arrive promptly and be prepared, keep everything they share confidential, and let them know if you need to cancel.</li></ul>Please feel free to review the Re:new Mentoring Agreement with your CR and use it to guide these conversations. It is in the CR’s file.&nbsp;Q: Can we use our Leader Guide in front of our CR?&nbsp;Yes. Explain to your CR that you will be using the Leader Guide to help walk them through the material. At times, you will read directly from it.Q: How quickly should we move through the material with our CR?&nbsp;It is important that you progress through the workbook at your CR’s pace. The&nbsp; workbook has 10 sections (along with three appendices that can be used at your discretion), but you do not need to complete one section each week. It may take a week to go through one section and a couple of weeks to go through others. Move at your CR’s pace, but tell them in the first meeting that the expectation for completing the curriculum is four to six months.&nbsp;Q: Should our CR help us fill out the flesh diagram?&nbsp;No, please complete the flesh diagram when you are away from your CR. Take your CR’s workbook home with you when you are ready to fill it out. Bring the completed flesh diagram (along with a copy for your CR) to the next meeting and review it.&nbsp;Q: Do we have to complete each section of the workbook in order?&nbsp;It is recommended that you go through the workbook as it’s arranged. Generally speaking, the CR will not be ready to apply the latter sections of the workbook until they have worked through the process of identifying false beliefs and learning the truth of God’s Word.&nbsp;Q: How do we use the Amen Depression and Anxiety Assessment?&nbsp;This tool is used by your Re:new staff member to assess the emotional and mental well-being of your CR. It helps identify things like chronic or seasonal depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies, and mental illnesses. We include it in your CR’s file for you to review. It will help you know your CR better and be aware of tendencies that may interfere with the mentoring process.&nbsp;Q: What do we do if our CR breaks the Mentoring Agreement?&nbsp;If your CR is not abiding by the Re:new Mentoring Agreement, please contact your Re:new staff member.&nbsp; Examples include missing meetings, being routinely late for meetings, and not completing assigned homework.&nbsp;Q: What if our CR needs professional help?&nbsp;If you feel that your CR needs a higher level of care than mentoring can provide, contact your Re:new staff member to discuss it. They may advise you to talk with your CR about it. If your CR agrees that they could benefit from counseling, mentoring can be put on hold.

<h3>Closure</h3>Q: How does our CR fill out the Re:new with Truth chart?&nbsp;This tool will allow your CR to track the process of renewing their mind. It will help them recognize real-life scenarios to evaluate if they are walking in their flesh or following the Spirit.Explain how to fill out each column in the chart and what they should include. What was the frustrating or hurtful situation? How did you feel as a result of that circumstance? What false belief was triggered? What were the old behaviors or emotions from those false beliefs? What is the new belief or truth? What are the new behaviors or emotions?&nbsp;During your closing meetings, you will review these charts with your CR. You will talk about the different scenarios they experienced and what their responses were to each.&nbsp;Q: How do we talk with our CR about the closure process?&nbsp;It is very important that you talk with your CR about ending the mentoring process. You will discuss it the first time you meet. Share with your CR the average time for mentoring is about four to six months, but there is flexibility. Assure them you will not stop meeting abruptly, but will transition to meeting less frequently. When you have completed the curriculum, talk about meeting every other week (maybe twice). Determine with your CR when your final meeting will be and use the last meeting to celebrate what God has done in their life. Let your CR know they can still call or email you occasionally to talk or meet.&nbsp;During closure, it is common for a CR to attempt to extend the mentoring process. They may cancel meetings or suddenly have crises in their lives. They may want to review previous sections in the workbook, or tell you they’re not ready to be on their own. Reassure them that they are ready to be on their own, and you will be available to meet in the future.&nbsp;Another important part of the closure process is talking with them about possible next steps. These next steps could be serving, baptism, joining a small group, or plugging into another Care environment (Oasis, counseling, etc.). Planning next steps may make it easier for your CR to move through the closure process.&nbsp;Q: What do we do with the Closure Form?&nbsp;After your last mentoring session, please complete the online Closure Form.&nbsp; This form is an opportunity for you to evaluate the mentoring process and what next steps you recommended. Your CR will have an opportunity to complete a separate survey in which we ask questions about their experience with Re:new mentoring.&nbsp;Q: What do we turn in to our Re:new Staff member when the mentoring process is complete?&nbsp;You will either give your CR’s file with their Re:new application to a staff member, or you can shred it. Your CR will keep their workbook.&nbsp;Q: Can we take breaks from mentoring?&nbsp;Yes, you can absolutely take breaks. It is important to evaluate your emotional, mental, and spiritual health and take breaks as needed. If an extended break is required due to illness, pregnancy, etc., talk with your Re:new staff member about changing your status to “Leave of Absence.” LOA status means you will not be working with a CR, but will continue to attend leader development and supervision events.

As you prepare to meet your first CR, we want to give you a final reminder that you cannot be an effective Re:new mentor by relying on your strength and resources.We all have a job description in the Re:new process. Your job is the tour guide. Your CR's job is to cooperate. God's job is to change and heal. You are not responsible for changing anyone. You must model dependence on God while you are sharing these transformational principles with others.&nbsp;In closing, our Re:new team would like to share a few of our favorite scriptures that accurately reflect the work God has called us to as Re:new mentors. You may have a few favorites of your own. We encourage you to write these down in your Leader Guide or Re:new workbook to remind you why you decided to mentor. It can be refreshing to reflect on these truths after a particularly difficult mentoring session with a CR who is struggling to implement the things they are learning.&nbsp;
